Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek

The Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek is a wonderful adventure destination in the secluded region of the mid-eastern Himalayas. The trek provides mesmerizing views of snow-capped peaks, including Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Madhya (6,257m), and Phurba Gyachung (6,637m) amidst beautiful scenery. It is located in the central Himalayas towards Nepal, far northeast, close to the Langtang and Gauri Shankar Himalayan ranges of Sindhupalchok district's Jugal rural municipality. The elevation of this base camp is 4,700 meters (15,420ft) from sea level.

The Jugal Himal trek is a less discovered and peaceful trekking spot that offers breathtaking views of surrounding areas, villages, waterfalls, flora and fauna, rivers and lakes, and rocky mountains, valleys, and hills. This place is a bit complicated trekking destination; the trek takes you away from popular routes, allowing you to experience the complete mountain wilderness. Here are five lakes: Suryakunda Lake, Naagkunda Lake, Saraswati Kunda Lake, Ganeshkunda Lake, and Bhairabkunda Lake. Crossing small ridges from Panchpokhari to Nema Gchukpa Kharka, Chhendang, Ne Pemasal, and Gyap Kharka reach Jugal base camp. Today’s trek is a long walk, where you need to be alert on some parts across a narrow trail. Mainly on the ledge of a high rocky cliff with some risk of rockfall, the trail takes a slow ascent. After an hour of trekking, reach a small grassy area at Tongsyup Gufa, a place with an overhanging cave.

In the early days, monks and high Buddhist priests used this cave as a good shelter for meditation. Approximately 6 to 7 hours from here, slow downhill to cross a stream; after that, reach your overnight camp at Ne Pemasal. Activities: experience high-altitude trekking, and enjoy panoramic mountain views and an amazing overhanging cave.

Gradually your adventurous trek comes to an end, reaching Kyangsing village, a short and last day of your trip journey. The morning starts following the south route as the trek gets closer to warm farm areas in the village of Kyangsing. Visit Kyangsing village's huge human settlement. The areas are settled by indigenous ethnic groups such as Sherpa, Tamang, and some other groups of people.

Enjoy the scenic drive back to Kathmandu through beautiful farmland and large human settlement areas. It takes around 6 hours to drive the journey from Kyangsing to Kathmandu. Even though it is a long drive, it is exciting; the road follows rough dirt tracks. After an hour on a bumpy hill off track roads, it then joins the main great road to Kathmandu. After an hour of driving to reach Kathmandu, take a rest and fresh and if possible, plan for a night walk at Thamel and enjoy a lovely night with your dinner.

From Bhairab Kunda, descend through scenic trails to Thulo Dhunga. The trek continues down south with some short ups and more downhill, as the path enters back into a dense forest of rhododendrons, pine, oaks, and fir trees. The walk leads to an exciting place called Nautalle Kharka, which means a temporary cattle and yak herder shelter of 9 stories high, probably constructed as a watchtower to guard their cattle from other wild animals. To reach at Thulo Dhunga it takes almost 6 hours and overnight camp near the farm areas of Thulo Dhunga.

The lovely morning begins at Jumle Pokhari, and after breakfast at camp, the trek follows towards Kappu Danda, a high hill and ridge. Bhairab Kunda Lake is different from other famous trails coming from the south direction, as your walk takes you from the northwest to reach the holy site, Bhairab Kunda. A charming holy lake is located at an elevation of 4,125m. The lake is significant as a pilgrimage destination for Hindu followers.

Likewise, Panch Pokhari and Bhairab Kunda, where religious events are organized once a year, that is, in July/August. Enjoy a wonderful visit to sacred Bhairab Kunda Lake from the campsite, a serene environment, and mesmerizing views of Jugal Himal and that area's unnamed Beautiful Peaks. To reach at Bhairab Kunda it takes roughly 5 hours and overnight camp near Bhairab Kunda.

Trek through beautiful and diverse landscapes, leaving the camp of Ne-Kharka and moving towards another wild country in Jumle Pokhari, a small glacial lake. The trek keeps an eye on a short downhill to Takpadding; after that, reach Phu Kharka, which is east of the main route of Somdong.

Your direction takes you to a new path around the areas of smaller glacial lakes of Jumle Pokhari, which is situated not far from Loom Pokhari and Bhairab Kunda lakes. Enjoy the lovely views and scenes of Jumale Pokhari and its surrounding natural areas and grazing land. Jumle Pokhari means "twin pond, due to its adjoining Loom Pokhari Lake. Explore diverse flora and fauna, enjoying the peace of overnight camp in Jumle Pokhari. To reach at Jumle Phokhari it takes approximately 5 hours.

Trek continues descending through familiar landscapes from the camp at Ne-Pemasal; your route diverts east towards Ne-Kharka for an overnight stop. Leaving an earlier path of the Panch Pokhari area, the trail follows eastward with ups and downs. Trek on, going through rugged landscapes of the glaciated moraine of rocks and ice in some parts. Total time it takes to reach there is nearly 6 hours. 

This day trek is a quite long walk on a new path; possibly only a few trekkers and explorers might have used this route. But it is more interesting to trek far and off from the main popular areas, following the hidden trail to reach an overnight camp in Ne-Kharka. The area is often visited by only a few cattle and yak herders from nearby villages during the summer season.

Trek begins to return from base camp and explore alternative routes, observing diverse landscapes and relaxing by the river. The retraceback journey leads further east of Sindhupalchok district with numerous trekking trails to reach Bhairab Kund.

The trek takes you back to Ne-Pemasal, but along with taking the east route via the Ne-Pemasal River. The opposite side from the path you walked the previous day toward Jugal Base Camp via Gyap Kharka. Eventually, the trek takes us towards Ne-Pemasal for the last overnight camp around the main area of Jugal Himal.

Your lovely morning begins in Gyap Kharka. Gyap Kharka is a summer grazing pasture area for cattle and yak. A short walk from here reaches Jugal Base Camp, your dream destination of the adventure.

The base camp route is rocky moraines and glaciers, so experience the surrounding lovely scenery, including Jugal Himal Base Camp. An afternoon with a forest to wonder at the remarkable scenery of the mountain range and take a short hike around. Overnight stay at Jugal Himal Base Camp experiencing base camp beauties and cold, windy weather and fresh snow. Today’s trek takes you on a moderate walk as the route ascends steadily, adding more heights to the adventure. Carry on trekking through challenging, beautiful landscapes and an uphill climb toward the small spot of Bumbaserpu at an altitude of 4,200 m. From here, another hour or more of climbing to reach the overnight camp in Gyap Kharka. Activities: trek through remote and rugged terrain and take pictures of breathtaking scenery. Total time is roughly 5 hours to reach Gyap Kharka.

A beautiful morning starts at Nema-Gchukpa Kharka, where you can see the close views of nearby mountains and peaks. Breakfast at camp, descend through forested areas, and cross small ridges. From Nema-Gchukpa Kharka, the adventure moves towards a Chhendang, which is quite down from this campsite.

The trek continues in the north direction. Reaching the top of Chidakpu Kharka at an elevation of 4,513m after a steep climb. See the view of the Langtang and Jugal Himal ranges, and after a long descent to Chhendang, camp overnight. Activities: Explore the changing landscapes from alpine meadows to dense forests. The total time it takes to reach at Chhundang is nearly 5 hours.

The trek begins from Panchpokhari to Nema-Kharka. After having morning breakfast in the lodges, your journey will continue through alpine meadows and rugged terrain. Your route leads towards Jugal Base Camp, moving straight north; a steep climb for a few hours leads to a crest and a ridge top above 4,400m high.

Facing outstanding views of nearby landscapes, you will have your packed lunch on the way. To reach Nema-Gchukpa Kharka, it takes you around 5 hours to walk.  A lovely overnight stay at Gchukpa Kharka in camp with amazing views of snow peaks. Activities consist of enjoying high-altitude trekking, observing alpine flora and fauna, and taking in stunning mountain views.

Today’s trek leads you towards Panchpokhari, and the trek continuously starts from Nosymapati through rhododendron forests and beautiful meadows. The trek will be a bit steep with rocky terrain. Today’s walk is going to be an adventure, although it takes around 5 hours to reach Panchpokhari. Visit the five sacred lakes: Suryakunda, Naagkunda, Saraswati Kunda, Ganeshkunda, and Bhairabkunda Lakes. Overnight stay in Pachpokhari. Activities include visiting sacred lakes, meditating, and taking part in spiritual activities if interested.

The beautiful morning starts at Thulo Botang village, and from here you can see breathtaking views of the surrounding Langtang Region Mountains and Ama Yangri Peak. After taking breakfast, the trek will continue towards Nosyampati through dense forests and traditional villages. Nosyampati has a small settlement of people, especially tea houses, herders, and lodge people.

The trek will be more slope along with beautiful forests and rhododendrons. As you go up, the vegetation patterns also change slowly, and open hills and find the alpine type of trees. The trek leads you through lush forests, enjoying bird-watching and experiencing the pristine natural environment. The total time it takes to reach at here is approximately 6 hours and overnight stay will be at Nosyampati.

Today is day four of the trek, and you will start your trek from Thulo Bhotang to Tupi Danda. The trek takes you through the waterfall, suspension bridges, and rivers toward Nosyampati; likewise, during the trek, you have to ascend rocky terrains. Lunch will be on the way in Herder's Gotha stay. Along the way, you find subtropical and tropical forest species of flora and fauna, and as you go up, you will find temperate forests and alpine forests as well as alpine meadows and rhododendron forests. After long time around 6 hours of trekking, you will reach Nosyampati, and your overnight stay will be here.

From today your trekking journey begins; the trek leads you to drive from Kathmandu to Thulo Botang, which takes approximately 6 hours. Crossing the Melamchi Bazaar Pul and scenic drive through beautiful landscapes and rural villages, agricultural farms, sustainable bridges, and amazing Melamchi rivers and waterfalls, and exploring the rich culture and heritage of Thulo Botang.

The village has huge human settlements of Tamang and other ethnic group people. Your overnight stay will be here in Thulo Bhotang village. Activities are experiencing the local culture, visiting heritage sites, and interacting with the local community.

Today is your rest day and trekking equipment preparation day. Take morning breakfast at the hotel and explore UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu such as Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu Darbar Square, and Patan Darbar Square, although for shopping for trekking gear, Thamel is the best option, where a variety of trekking and hiking expedition gear and equipment are available. Activities are final trek preparation, equipment check, and finalizing gear and supplies for tomorrow's trek. Essential Information

Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek Difficulty 

The Jugal Himal Base Camp trek in Nepal is generally considered a moderately challenging trek and needs previous trekking experience. Trekking trails are relatively narrow, and trekkers should walk through rocky terrain in some parts, up and down. To trek in the Jugal Himal Base Camp trek requires physical and mental fitness.

  • Trekking distance: On the Jugal Himal Base Camp trek, you will trek approximately 140 kilometers. Daily walking distance ranges approximately from 10km to 13km.
  • Daily walking hours: The daily walking hours are around 6 to 7 hours.  
  • Tourist infrastructure: The tourist infrastructure along the Jugal Himal Base Camp trek route is good. You will not get luxury lodges and teahouses to spend nights on this trekking trail because it is a less-traveled trekking destination. Likewise, charging, hot showers, and Wi-Fi services are not available.

Trekking Routes

There are two trekking trails to reach Jugal Himal Base Camp: one is from Chautara, Kyangsing, to Jugal Base Camp, and the second is from Bhotang via Panch Pokhari to Jugal Base Camp. As well, trekking routes are perfect, but the Chautara via Kyangsing route is the shortest but off-the-beaten-route for trekkers.

Accommodation and Food during the Trek

On this 19-day Jugal Himal Base Camp Trek, you will spend the night at a teahouse and lodges up to Panch Pokhari and then in camping tents. Lodges and teahouses are simple accommodations with proper meals up to Panch Pokhari and on the way back to Kyagsing village. On average, most rooms have twin beds, and a few have attached bathrooms. But on the whole, expect shared bathrooms. Spend the night in lodges, teahouses, or tents. While trekking, carry all toiletries with you, including toilet paper.

  • Service in the Lodge: Services like hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging are not available in the lodges/teahouses.
  • Drinking Water: You can only use boiled water, and make sure that if you do not find boiled water on time, then you can use water purification tablets to filter it further.
  • Snacks: Buy light snacks in Kathmandu for the trek. Your favorite things may not be found on the way to buy along the trails. Pack nuts, energy bars, chocolates, dried fruits, and other things you love to eat during your trek trips.
